SIPITANG: The mobile court concept, introduced in Sabah and Sarawak, has been able to resolve 95 per cent of cases involving late registration of births in rural and interior areas of Sabah, since its setup in 2007.
Kota Kinabalu High Court deputy registrar Amir Shah Amir Hassan said almost 200 cases were lodged with the mobile court during its visits to several locations in the Sipitang district.
Amir Shah said cases handled by the mobile court were not confined to only endorsement of birth certificates, but also to hear criminal cases for mention, registration of civil cases and as commissioner of oath.
“Actually, we extend the functions of the court outside the office to the rural folk,” he told reporters at the two-say Mobile Court programme at Kampung Long Pasia, about 123km from here.
Kampung Long Pasia, with a population of about 500 Lundayeh people, is located near the borders of Sabah, Sarawak and East Kalimantan, Indonesia. It is about four to five hour ride on a four-wheel-drive vehicle along logging roads from Sipitang.
On the programme in Long Pasia, Amir Shah said it was attended by about 200 people who needed assistance to obtain personal documents, like birth certificate andidentity card.
Meanwhile, Sipitang magistrate Ana Arabi Wazani said the operation in Long Pasia was the fourth held since 2009 and it was held with the cooperation of the National Registration Department.
She said prior to this, the mobile court had been to Paitan in Sandakan; Sook in Pensiangan and Pegalungan in Nabawan.
There are plans for the mobile court to go to Pulau Banggi, Kudat, Tenom, Keningau and Sandakan, she added.
This mobile court concept was mooted by Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Richard Malanjum to address backlog of cases and verification of documents in the rural and remotes areas. – Bernama
